Highlights

Columbia's reputation as a center of excellence in hydrogen, fuel cells, and clean energy continues to grow. In following the recommendations of the Next Energy Initiative 20 year strategic plan for South Carolina, below are some highlights of key milestones that were accomplished in the Collaborative’s fourth year of operations.

  • $15,000,000 + in hydrogen, fuel cells, and future fuels-related federal research contracts awarded to the University of South Carolina
  • USC Future Fuels awarded $12.5M to lead one of the Department of Energy's Energy Frontier Research Centers; the largest award in the history of the university
  • Over $6,000,000 in total non-research investments for hydrogen and fuel cells in the Midlands
  • The Columbia fuel cell community grew with the addition of NextGenEn and Logan EnergySC
  • Collexis Holdings launched its "Fuel Cell Dashboard" product in partnership with USC
  • South Carolina's first fuel cell manufacturing facility launched by Trulite
  • Trulite and Boroscience International collaborate on a $500,000 Office of Naval Research Advanced Energy Storage Award
  • (6) projects selected for funding under Fuel Cell Challenge 2009
  • USC-Columbia Fuel Cell Collaborative awarded the 2009 Southern Innovator Award – Southern Growth Policies Board, 2009
  • South Carolina cited as "top five" destination for hydrogen and fuel cell technology – National Hydrogen Association, 2009
  • USC-Columbia Fuel Cell Collaborative team expands with addition of Stewart McKenzie, Zone Manager for SC Launch
  • Endowed Chair for Polymer Nanomaterials, Dr. Brian Benicewicz, joins USC faculty
  • The City of Columbia and the SC Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Alliance hosted South Carolina's first major alternative energy industry conference: NHA 2009
  • SCRA launches major fundraising effort for Hydrogen Infrastructure Development Fund
